Manu Kone: Another Midfield Chase Liverpool Risk Watching From The Sidelines

Manu Kone’s name is back in circulation, and once again Liverpool find themselves discussing a player rather than pursuing one. The Roma midfielder has resurfaced in Premier League conversation ahead of a summer that already carries plenty of significance, and this time it is Manchester United, not Liverpool, doing the early groundwork. According to L’Equipe, United are currently the English club showing the clearest intent, with initial talks already under way.

A familiar shortlist, a familiar hesitation

This is not the first time Kone’s profile has appealed to Liverpool. Back during the 2023 rebuild, he was exactly the kind of physical, ball winning presence the club were said to be hunting as a long term answer to life after Fabinho. That move never happened. Liverpool have since lifted the Premier League under Arne Slot in 2024-25, but the search for a genuine defensive controller in midfield has quietly rumbled on in the background, surfacing again whenever a player like Kone re-enters the conversation.

Now 25 and tied to Roma until 2029, Kone gives the Italian club real leverage in any negotiation. That contract length matters a great deal. Clubs rarely need to sell a player with four years still to run unless the numbers are right, and Roma will know exactly how valuable that position is. Even so, his combination of athleticism, recovery speed and ball winning instinct remains rare, and it is precisely what Liverpool have missed in patches since Fabinho’s departure.

Manchester United setting the pace

United’s interest looks measured rather than advanced, particularly in a window already shaped by World Cup disruption and business completed elsewhere, including deals for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. But measured or not, they are further down the road than Liverpool appear to be right now, and that alone should matter at Anfield. If there is genuine interest in Kone, this is the moment to establish whether it is a real priority or simply one of several names being monitored from a comfortable distance.

With Roma open to the right offer, the player understood to be receptive to a move to England, and a direct rival already circling, this is not a situation Liverpool can afford to sit on indefinitely.

There is a pattern here that supporters will recognise uncomfortably well by now. A player Liverpool have liked before, who solves an obvious problem, ends up being chased more seriously by somebody else. That is not a reflection on Kone, who is clearly a good footballer. It is a reflection on decisiveness in a market that punishes hesitation.

Liverpool’s midfield has never fully replaced what Fabinho offered defensively, and different combinations have papered over that gap rather than actually solved it. Kone looks like a player who could genuinely close it. Andoni Iraola has inherited a squad that needs clear direction in recruitment every bit as much as it needs quality, and this situation is as good a test as any of whether that direction truly exists. Either push hard for Kone now, or identify the next name quickly and move on. What supporters do not want, again, is another summer spent quietly admiring a deal that eventually gets done somewhere else.
