Why Letting Akliouche Go to Paris Might Be the Right Call for Liverpool

Every summer produces at least one name that hangs around Liverpool’s rumour mill without ever quite turning into a genuine chase, and this year that name looks increasingly like Maghnes Akliouche. The Monaco forward has been on our radar for a while, but the latest word from France suggests the conversation is essentially over before it started, with Paris Saint-Germain holding all the cards.

PSG have done the hard part already

According to TeamTalk, personal terms were sorted between Akliouche and PSG a while back, and the player has apparently made his preference for the Parc des Princes clear since early in the window. That is usually the moment a transfer story stops being interesting for anyone else involved. Once a player has picked his destination and told people as much, rival admiration tends to count for very little, no matter how long a club has been watching from a distance.

Our read is that Liverpool were never in a position to compete with that kind of clarity of intent from the player’s side. Scouting reports and internal admiration are one thing, but a forward who has already agreed his future elsewhere is a closed door, not an open negotiation. There was probably never a version of this summer where Liverpool made a serious, competing offer once that personal alignment was already in place.

The fee was always going to be the sticking point

Monaco, for their part, are said to be holding out for something in the region of fifty million euros and have knocked back three separate PSG offers already. That is a serious asking price for a player who, while talented, is not the finished article, and it tells you Monaco intend to see this deal through on their own terms rather than PSG’s. Even with confidence growing that a compromise is close, the structure of any eventual fee, add ons, sell on clauses and payment schedule, will matter as much as the headline number.

None of that really changes the calculus for Liverpool though. Whether PSG pay forty five million or the full fifty, the story was decided by the player’s preference long before the fee was ever settled. Money rarely overrides a made up mind at this level of the game.

Why we would not lose sleep over this one

There is a version of this where Liverpool fans feel hard done by, watching a name they were linked with slip away to a direct European rival. We do not think that reaction is warranted here. Under Andoni Iraola there appears to be a genuine push to recruit forwards who offer mobility, intensity and the versatility to play across different attacking roles, and Akliouche fits that broader profile on paper. But fitting a profile and being genuinely available are two different things, and this one was arguably never live in the way some of the earlier reports implied.

The more encouraging takeaway is what this saga says about Liverpool’s recruitment approach generally. Being linked with sharp, technical attacking talent across multiple leagues suggests the scouting network is doing its job properly, identifying the right kind of player even when a specific deal does not materialise. That selectiveness, rather than chasing every available name that pops up on a shortlist, tends to be the healthier long term strategy for a club still building a squad with real intent.

It is also worth remembering how often this exact pattern repeats itself across a transfer window. A club gets linked, the interest is reported as more advanced than it actually is, and then reality catches up once the player’s own preference becomes public. Supporters who have followed enough windows will recognise the shape of this one immediately.

If Akliouche ends up at PSG, so be it. Liverpool should keep their powder dry for a forward who actually wants to be there, because that remains the only kind of deal worth doing in a market this competitive.
