Transfer stories rarely arrive with much clarity, but the latest word on Maghnes Akliouche is refreshingly direct. According to Fabrizio Romano’s update on X, the Monaco winger currently sits far closer to Paris Saint-Germain than to Anfield, even though Liverpool are known to have made an approach. It is worth being honest about what that means. An enquiry from Liverpool is not nothing, but it is a long way short of a green light, and Romano’s framing suggests PSG have simply done more of the groundwork.

That distinction matters more than the headline suggests. Clubs make contact with agents and intermediaries constantly during the summer, and most of those conversations go nowhere. What tends to decide these situations is which club has structured an actual deal, agreed the framework of personal terms, and convinced the player their project is the right one. On that measure, PSG appear to be well ahead.

Money Could Still Complicate PSG’s Position

The one genuine variable is Monaco’s valuation. Reports suggest PSG have already had more than one offer turned down, with one bid pitched at around £34m. Other reporting has Monaco’s actual asking price sitting closer to €60m to €70m, which converts to something in the region of £51m to £60m. That is a meaningful gap for even a club with PSG’s resources to close, and it leaves a sliver of room for Liverpool if the French champions hesitate rather than meet the number outright.

Akliouche’s profile explains the appeal on both sides of the Channel. He is a right sided attacker, technically comfortable and tactically well drilled, with enough physical tools to suit a high intensity system. Under Andoni Iraola, Liverpool have made clear they want directness and players comfortable in one on one duels in wide areas, and Akliouche’s game maps onto that reasonably well on paper.

Our Take: Chase Value, Not Sentiment

We think Liverpool are right to have looked at Akliouche, and just as right not to be dragged into a bidding war for a player who appears to have already made his mind up. Modern recruitment has to be unsentimental about this. If a target’s heart is set on a rival club, the smarter move is usually to accept it quickly and reallocate that time and budget toward someone whose priorities line up more cleanly with the club’s own plans.

None of that means the story is dead. Monaco clearly want serious money, PSG have not yet met it, and Liverpool remain one of a small number of clubs capable of moving decisively if the situation shifts. That is why this sits in the difficult category rather than the finished one. The bigger picture, though, is that Liverpool need reinforcement out wide regardless of which name eventually fills that slot. Whether it ends up being Akliouche or an alternative target, the requirement does not change, and supporters would do well to focus on the role Iraola needs filled rather than fixating on any single name currently doing the rounds.
