Lewis Koumas has to earn his place under Iraola, not assume it

Pre-season under a new head coach is rarely kind to fringe academy players, and Lewis Koumas knows it. At 20 years old and already a full Wales international, he is at the stage of his development where potential stops being enough on its own. Andoni Iraola’s first weeks in charge are not a chance for young players to be admired from a distance, they are an audit, and Koumas either shows he belongs or he is sent back out on loan to keep developing elsewhere.

Saying the right things publicly

Koumas has been open about wanting to force his way into Iraola’s plans, pointing to his pressing and work rate as qualities that should appeal to a coach whose teams are built around intensity and effort off the ball. That is a smart read of the situation. Iraola does not tend to build sides around comfort, he builds them around players willing to run themselves into the ground for the team, and Koumas talking about energy rather than end product suggests he understands exactly what is being asked of him this summer.

Versatility as a survival strategy

The practical case for keeping Koumas involved is straightforward enough. Liverpool need depth across the front line, and they need players capable of covering more than one position. Naturally a left sided, right footed winger, Koumas has shown enough mobility to play elsewhere across the attack, and in a squad still being shaped by a new coaching staff, that kind of flexibility buys a young player time that pure specialism would not. It does not guarantee him a place in the matchday squad, but it keeps him relevant to the conversation, which at this stage is arguably just as important.

There is also a wider point here about how Iraola wants to build his squad. Improving what is already at the club matters as much to him as bringing in fresh faces, and a young player who presses well, reads situations quickly and does not need to be carried defensively fits that approach far better than a marquee signing sitting on the bench for the sake of it.

The competition will not wait

None of this happens in a vacuum, though. Left wing is not short of options at Liverpool, so if Koumas is going to carve out real minutes, it will likely come through proving he can operate across multiple attacking positions rather than nailing down one specific role. Expect Liverpool to still add attacking reinforcements this summer regardless of how well he performs. No club with serious ambitions hands a 20 year old the responsibility of solving its entire depth problem, and Koumas being useful is a different thing from Koumas being the answer.

Our take

This is exactly how it should work for a player in his position. Koumas has said the right things about wanting to fight for a place rather than expecting one, and now pre-season needs to back that up. If he presses well, makes quick decisions and shows he can contribute without the ball, he gives Iraola a genuinely useful option from within the building rather than one bought in July. If he cannot, the loan route remains sensible and nobody should treat that as a failure. Minutes earned through form in training and friendlies mean far more than minutes handed out through sentiment, and Koumas appears to understand that better than most players his age.
