Gomez Eases Back In as Liverpool Manage His Comeback With Care

A Substitution That Was Always the Plan

When Jeremy Jacquet replaced Gomez at the interval, it would have been easy to assume something had gone wrong. Given how much of Gomez’s career has been disrupted by fitness issues, any early change naturally raises an eyebrow among supporters. This one, though, was not a reaction to a problem, it was the plan all along. Andoni Iraola confirmed afterwards that the club had never intended to push Gomez much beyond half time on his return, preferring to ease him back in gradually rather than risk a setback by asking for a full ninety minutes straight away.

It is a sensible approach given the player’s history, and one that prioritises the bigger picture over any temptation to squeeze more minutes out of him in a game Liverpool were already controlling.

Steady Rather Than Spectacular

Gomez did not need to do anything flashy to make his return count. He kept things simple, marshalled his area competently and offered a calming, experienced presence in a backline that included several younger faces. His stat line for the evening, four clearances, two blocks and one interception, reflects a player doing the basics well rather than chasing headlines. After such a long spell out, that kind of understated reliability is precisely what Liverpool needed to see.

There is broader value here too. With the fixture list only getting busier once the international break has passed, Iraola will need every fit defensive option available to rotate his squad without weakening it, and having Gomez back in that mix again changes the calculus considerably.

Bournemouth Test Likely Comes Too Soon

Don’t expect Gomez to walk straight into the side for Sunday’s Premier League trip to Bournemouth. Virgil van Dijk and Jacquet look set to continue as the senior centre-back pairing, while Ronald Araujo provides Iraola with another option on the right side of defence. Gomez, however, is now firmly part of that conversation again after being absent from it for weeks.

For a season that had effectively stalled before it properly began for Gomez, Tuesday represented a meaningful first step back. He got through 45 controlled minutes without any apparent issue, and Iraola now has another experienced body to call upon. There will be tougher nights ahead, but managing this one quietly and without incident is exactly the platform Liverpool needed to build from.
