Ngumoha’s big chance arrives as Tuchel brings Alexander-Arnold back into the fold
Rio Ngumoha has landed his first competitive England call-up, and the timing could hardly be better for a teenager who has spent the past few weeks pushing his way into Andoni Iraola’s plans at Anfield. Elsewhere in Thomas Tuchel’s squad, a far more familiar face returns, with former Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold recalled for the first time in over a year.
Our view is that Ngumoha’s selection is the more interesting story of the two. Recalls for established internationals happen all the time, but a genuinely competitive debut for an 18 year old winger says something real about how he is currently viewed at both club and country.
From a World Cup training camp to a Nations League squad
Ngumoha is Liverpool’s only representative in Tuchel’s squad, according to Jack Lusby’s reporting for This Is Anfield, and it caps a rapid rise for a player who was only invited into England’s senior set-up as preparation for the World Cup rather than as a guaranteed squad member.
He made his senior bow off the bench in a 1-0 friendly win over New Zealand in June, and reflected on the experience as a “crazy feeling” in comments given to England Football. That appearance earned him the player of the match award, but a friendly cameo is a very different proposition to genuine involvement in fixtures that carry Nations League points.
Why Liverpool form has caught Tuchel’s eye
Ngumoha’s club form makes the call-up easy to understand. He has made five appearances under Iraola already, including three starts, and has shown he can operate on either flank. His role in Tuesday’s 3-1 Carabao Cup win over Tottenham was a particularly eye-catching example, setting up Alexis Mac Allister’s opener from the right.
That kind of positional flexibility is exactly what a national manager wants from a young attacker heading into a packed international window. Whether Tuchel actually uses him against Spain, Czechia or Croatia remains to be seen, but simply being trusted with the option gives Ngumoha something to build towards.
Alexander-Arnold’s recall is worth watching too
Alexander-Arnold’s return is notable in its own right. The Real Madrid full-back last featured for England in June 2025, an unused substitute in a 3-1 defeat to Senegal, and has faced competition for his club position from summer signing Denzel Dumfries under Jose Mourinho this season.
A recall after this long away gives him a chance to remind Tuchel what he can offer, though it says something about the strength of England’s options that his previous absence stretched well beyond a year. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott also joins the squad, having been part of the same pre-World Cup preparation group as Ngumoha.
Four matches, one clear opportunity
England begin against Spain at Wembley on 26 September, travel to Czechia on 29 September, face Croatia on 3 October, and finish the window at home to Czechia again on 6 October. That is a demanding sequence for any squad to navigate, let alone one blending recalled experience with genuine newcomers.
For Ngumoha, the task now is straightforward even if the stage is not. Liverpool have already shown they trust him with minutes in matches that matter. The next step is showing Tuchel he deserves the same treatment on the biggest stage English football has to offer.
