What Man City’s Financial Breaches Verdict Could Mean For Liverpool’s Honours List

Two Trophies Liverpool Could End Up Adding To The Cabinet Without Kicking A Ball

The Manchester City financial breaches case has moved past the stage of abstract argument. According to Liverpool.com, the Premier League has confirmed City were found guilty on almost every charge relating to breaches of financial rules. City deny wrongdoing and an appeal is expected, so this is nowhere near a finished story, but the shape of the possible outcomes is now much clearer, and it is worth working through exactly what it could mean for Liverpool.

The Two Honours In Question

Two pieces of silverware sit at the centre of the discussion if the Premier League ever decides retrospective punishment is the right route. The first is the 2013/14 title, the campaign that ended with Liverpool finishing two points adrift of City in one of the most dramatic run ins in the competition’s history. The second is the 2016 League Cup final, which finished 1-1 before City won on penalties. Liverpool were the closest challengers in both, so if any reassignment follows a guilty verdict, those are the honours that would logically move to Anfield.

It is worth being precise about the timeline too. Much of the fiercest recent history between these two clubs, the near misses of 2018/19 and 2021/22 in particular, sits outside the years actually under investigation. However raw those memories still feel, they simply are not part of this specific case.

Why A Guilty Verdict Does Not Guarantee Stripped Titles

This is the part that requires a level head. Being found guilty does not automatically mean trophies get reassigned, and it certainly does not hand Liverpool anything on its own. The Premier League has a range of sanctions available, and a future facing punishment such as a heavy fine, a transfer restriction or a points deduction applied going forward may well be viewed as the tidier option. Retrospectively unpicking title races and cup finals opens an administrative headache that reaches well beyond Liverpool, since Manchester United, Sunderland, Stoke City and Arsenal would all have claims of their own to domestic honours from that period.

What It Would Actually Mean For Liverpool

If the honours list does change, it changes something real historically and commercially. But anyone who has followed football for long enough knows that lifting a trophy years after the fact is not remotely the same experience as winning it on the pitch, in the stadium, in the moment. A certificate arriving in the post can never replicate that.

So yes, there is a route by which Liverpool could end up with two additional honours attached to their history. Right now though, that is a possibility rather than an outcome, and the next genuine milestone is simply what sanction the Premier League settles on once the legal process, including City’s appeal, has actually run its course. Supporters need to believe the competition takes its own integrity seriously. Without that belief, every title race risks feeling like an argument before a ball is even kicked.
