Liverpool’s Left-Back Headache Points Them Back Toward Barcelona

Balde Interest Shows Iraola Isn’t Finished Shaking Up That Back Line

Liverpool’s full-back conversation has quietly turned into one of the more uncomfortable topics among supporters this season, and a fresh name from Spain is only going to add fuel to it. According to journalist Juan Jesus, Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde has emerged as a genuine target for Liverpool ahead of the January window, with the club reportedly monitoring his situation closely.

That Liverpool are even looking in this direction tells its own story. Milos Kerkez arrived from Bournemouth with a reunion with Andoni Iraola supposed to smooth his adaptation, given the pair had worked together before at a previous club. Instead, more than a year into his Liverpool career, question marks remain, and left-back has stayed a talking point rather than a settled position.

Kerkez Still Hasn’t Won Iraola Over

There is no getting away from it, a fee in the region of £40m was always going to invite scrutiny, and performances have been uneven enough that the scrutiny hasn’t gone away. Kostas Tsimikas remains a reliable option when called upon and offers experience Liverpool trust, but it doesn’t sound like the club see him as the long-term solution either. After Andy Robertson’s exit, the expectation was that Kerkez would simply take the jersey and run with it. Instead, the position has remained one of the more debated areas of the squad, and if Iraola wanted a higher ceiling at left-back, the message from this report is that he hasn’t found it yet among his own options.

Balde, for his part, ticks a lot of boxes. He is still only in his early twenties, already has Champions League and La Liga experience at one of the biggest clubs in the world, and brings the recovery pace and directness that suits a coach who wants his full-backs defending large spaces and pushing forward aggressively. Game time in Barcelona has been patchy this season, which is usually the trigger point for a player in his position to start weighing up a move elsewhere, and Chelsea and AC Milan are credited with watching the situation too.

It also fits a wider pattern since Iraola took over in the summer. Liverpool’s business under the new coaching staff has leaned toward players who are already proven at a high level rather than long-term projects, and Balde fits that mould far more neatly than a raw alternative would. A move like this would not just be about fixing one position, it would be a statement about how Liverpool intend to approach squad building under their new head coach going forward.

The Araujo Precedent Makes This Easier To Believe

It also helps that Liverpool already have a working relationship with this exact kind of scenario. Ronald Araujo’s loan move from Barcelona has given Iraola an aggressive, adaptable option across the back line, and his early performances have gone some way to answering questions about Liverpool’s defensive depth this season. If the club is comfortable doing business with Barcelona once, doing it again for a left-back feels far less of a stretch than it might otherwise.

None of that means a January deal is close. The expectation, according to the report, is that Liverpool will keep assessing the position into the turn of the year rather than rushing into anything, and Barcelona’s own stance on Balde will matter just as much as Liverpool’s interest does. If he is genuinely open to leaving in January, though, competition for his signature is likely to be fierce, and Liverpool would at least be positioned early in that race.

Our View

We would understand supporters feeling conflicted about this one. Kerkez was sold to Liverpool fans as the long-term answer at left-back barely a year ago, and reports like this inevitably raise fair questions about recruitment planning and patience. But football moves quickly, and if a head coach does not see what he needs in a position, waiting around out of loyalty to a transfer fee rarely ends well for anyone. If Balde is genuinely attainable and the upgrade Iraola believes he could be, most supporters would take that over sentiment every time. Liverpool have a problem position to solve, and this at least looks like a sensible route toward solving it.
