Why Real Madrid Circling Alex Scott Should Worry Liverpool

Bournemouth’s Alex Scott has quietly become one of the most contested names in English football, and the picture just got more complicated. Liverpool and Chelsea have been tracking him for some time, but word from TeamTalk now places Real Madrid in the conversation too, a development that changes the shape of any move well before a ball is kicked on it.

The timing is not an accident. Scott’s recent breakthrough with England, including a start in the 7-0 demolition of Croatia in Rijeka, has put him in front of a different class of scout. Real Madrid representatives were reportedly present for that fixture, and Scott is understood to have been a specific reason for their trip.

Madrid’s checks go back further than one night

What stands out in the reporting is that Real Madrid’s interest is not a reaction to a single eye-catching cameo. The Spanish champions are said to have watched Scott on at least three separate occasions already, including during Bournemouth’s run to a Europa League win over Real Sociedad last month. That kind of repeated scouting pattern tends to mean a club is building a genuine file on a player rather than simply noting a name for later.

There is no suggestion of a bid being imminent, and some reports even frame Madrid’s move as more likely for a future window rather than this one. Even so, once a club of that stature starts doing the groundwork, the rest of the market usually has to adjust its thinking. Liverpool and Chelsea can no longer treat this purely as a domestic tussle.

Bournemouth are digging in, for now

Bournemouth’s official stance has not shifted. The club are pushing to tie Scott down to a new contract and have made clear internally that he will not be sold in January regardless of who comes calling. That buys them time and leverage, and it is a sensible position for a selling club holding one of its best assets.

The problem for Bournemouth is that holding the line in January does not make the wider interest disappear. AC Milan have also been credited with scouting Scott, though their involvement looks limited given his valuation is already said to sit above £75m, a figure that realistically narrows serious buyers to a small group of the wealthiest clubs in Europe.

Our take

From a Liverpool standpoint, there is plenty to like here beyond the transfer gossip itself. Scott fits the profile this recruitment team has generally favoured: young, comfortable in possession, capable of playing more than one midfield role, and still visibly improving each time he features. A player does not end up being linked with Liverpool, Chelsea and Real Madrid in the same breath unless the ability is real.

What should matter more to Liverpool than the noise is the fact they are reportedly already involved rather than playing catch up. Good business in this part of the market is usually done quietly, long before stories like this one surface publicly. If the interest from Anfield is as substantial as described, the groundwork should already be in place.

Real Madrid remain the obvious complication. Their interest can accelerate quickly once checks turn into genuine intent, and Bournemouth’s resistance in January will only delay matters rather than end them. If Liverpool see Scott as a long term piece of the midfield rather than a luxury, hesitation is the one thing they cannot afford once the market reopens.
