LatestIraola’s Injury Puzzle: How Liverpool Should Line Up Against Villarreal

Gilberto Mora’s Viral Thumbs-Up Has Liverpool Fans Reading the Tea Leaves

A Thumbs-Up, A Shirt, and a Lot of Liverpool Wishful Thinking

It does not take much to set Liverpool’s transfer rumour mill spinning these days, and a clip of Gilberto Mora acknowledging a fan in a Liverpool shirt has done exactly that. In the video, a supporter holds up a Reds top and shouts the club’s name at the Mexican teenager, who responds with a simple thumbs-up. Within hours it was being treated by some as a quiet signal of where his future lies. We would urge a bit of caution before reading too much into a gesture that takes less than two seconds to make.

A Gesture That Could Mean Almost Anything

Players acknowledge supporters in all sorts of shirts all the time, and a polite nod to someone holding up a club’s colours is not the same as a transfer being agreed behind the scenes. Mora is an 18 year old attacker who has already drawn admiring glances from some of the biggest clubs on the continent, so it is hardly a surprise that any interaction involving him gets picked apart. The clip is fun, but it tells us very little about what is actually happening in the background.

The Genuine Interest Behind the Hype

Strip away the viral moment and there is still a real story here. Mora has been one of the standout young talents to emerge from Mexican football since breaking into the Club Tijuana first team at just 15, and his comfort on the ball and eye for an incisive pass have made him a target worth tracking. According to DaveOCKOP, Liverpool have been credited with exploring a deal that could cost in the region of £37m, though neither club has confirmed anything of the sort. Real Madrid and Barcelona have also been strongly linked, which gives a decent indication of the level of competition Liverpool would be up against if they wanted to push the deal through. Adding to the intrigue, reports had suggested a “historic agreement” might land around Mora’s 18th birthday on October 14, yet that date came and went without any announcement. His representative, Rafaela Pimenta, has given nothing away either, simply stating she does not comment on transfer rumours whenever she is asked.

Would He Actually Suit This Liverpool Side?

Under Andoni Iraola, Liverpool are still shaping what this next version of the squad looks like, and a versatile, press-resistant attacking midfielder like Mora fits the profile of player most modern sides are chasing. Committing £37m to a teenager is never a decision taken lightly, especially with other areas of the squad also competing for investment, but getting in early on a player of this calibre before his valuation climbs further has an obvious logic to it. Whether Liverpool can actually win the race for his signature is a different question entirely, and on the evidence so far it is one that remains wide open. For now, Reds fans have little more than a thumbs-up to go on, and that is nowhere near enough to start planning a unveiling.
