Manu Kone back on Liverpool’s radar as Bayern Munich enter the race
Liverpool’s January planning has barely begun in public, but one familiar name has resurfaced behind the scenes: Manu Kone. The Roma midfielder was previously tracked by the Reds, and according to Calciomercato, Bayern Munich have now joined that pursuit, turning a quiet admiration into something that could move quickly if it develops.
Why the interest never really went away
Clubs rarely return to a profile unless it still fits what they need, and Kone’s situation has not changed much since Liverpool first looked his way. At 25, he sits in that sweet spot between proven quality and a player still with resale value, and his performances under Gian Piero Gasperini have only strengthened the case. Composed on the ball, disciplined positionally, and capable of carrying the sort of tempo Liverpool’s midfield has occasionally lacked this season.
Our view is that this has the hallmarks of a name clubs keep circling rather than an imminent move, but that does not make it any less relevant. Liverpool’s midfield picture is far from settled. Alexis Mac Allister’s long term role has invited debate, and Andoni Iraola is still working out where his squad needs more balance. None of that guarantees a January swoop, but it explains why a player like Kone keeps appearing on lists.

Bayern’s arrival changes the calculation
What shifts here is competition. Liverpool have historically preferred to avoid major spending in the middle of a season unless there is a specific reason to move, but history also shows they will act decisively when a target they rate risks being taken by a direct rival. Bayern wading in forces a question Liverpool may not have wanted to answer yet: is Kone someone they genuinely want, or simply someone they like the look of from a distance?
Roma have no obvious incentive to sell cheaply in January, and a club of Bayern’s stature entering the conversation only pushes any fee further out of reach. If Liverpool want to be taken seriously here, admiration will need to turn into action fairly soon.
What a deal might actually look like
There is also a practical side to this that gets skipped over too quickly. Roma are not a club desperate to offload a player they value, and a January window rarely produces bargains for a midfielder this well regarded. Liverpool would likely need to stretch into territory that competes directly with Bayern’s resources, which changes the nature of the conversation from a sensible bit of business into a genuine financial commitment. That is not necessarily a reason to walk away, but it is a reason to expect any movement here to take time rather than arrive suddenly in the next transfer window.
Our take
There is a nagging sense that midfield reinforcement should be a summer project rather than a January scramble, especially with Iraola still shaping this group. At the same time, waiting too long on a player this suited to the role carries its own risk. Kone is one of those links that makes complete sense on paper. Whether it becomes anything more than that will say a lot about how urgently Liverpool actually view their midfield options right now.
