Liverpool’s Mac Allister Decision Makes No Sense To Me
I’m struggling to understand what Liverpool are thinking when it comes to Alexis Mac Allister.
We’re being linked with several midfielders ahead of January, which is encouraging because I’ve been banging on about the need to strengthen that area for months.
But at the same time, we’re hearing that Liverpool currently have no intention of offering Mac Allister a new contract.
Can somebody explain the logic to me?
He’s been one of our best players this season, he’s got experience of winning major trophies, and Andoni Iraola has publicly praised his importance to the team.
Yet we’re apparently considering allowing his contract situation to drift while looking at spending enormous money elsewhere.
I’m sorry, but that doesn’t make sense to me.
Alexis Mac Allister Deserves A New Liverpool Contract
According to Ben Jacobs, Liverpool’s current intention is not to offer Mac Allister a new deal.
Now, Lewis Steele has previously suggested that we shouldn’t rule out an extension, so I appreciate there are differing reports.
But if Jacobs is correct, I think Liverpool are making a mistake.
Mac Allister turns 28 in December. He’s hardly approaching the end of his career.
Give him another four years and you’re only taking him through to 32.
What’s the problem with that?
I understood the concerns last season. His performances weren’t good enough, and I questioned whether we were beginning to see a physical decline.
But he’s been absolutely brilliant this season.
Against Villarreal, he scored twice and helped drag Liverpool back into a Champions League match that had started terribly.
He’s rediscovered his confidence, his passing looks sharper, and he’s influencing games again.
I also think it’s important to remember what he’s spoken about regarding the difficulties inside the dressing room last season following the tragic loss of Diogo Jota.
There were circumstances affecting these players that went far beyond football.
Now we’re seeing Mac Allister performing consistently again.
Iraola described him as another leader in the squad, highlighting his experience and the trophies he’s won for club and country.
Surely that matters?
We’ve already lost Curtis Jones, and Wataru Endo’s future looks uncertain.
Why would we willingly lose more experience from midfield?
I don’t want another situation where Real Madrid start circling and Liverpool suddenly discover they’ve left themselves with very little negotiating power.
Get around the table and have the conversation.
Lamine Camara Is The Midfielder I Want Liverpool To Sign
Let’s talk about the players we’re being linked with.
Ben Jacobs has reported that Liverpool admire Alex Scott, Lamine Camara and Manu Koné.
Chelsea reportedly consider themselves favourites for Scott, although we’ve also heard suggestions that Bournemouth believe Liverpool are leading the race.
So who’s actually ahead?
I’ve no idea.
What I do know is that my preferred signing remains Lamine Camara.
I’ve said it repeatedly because I think he offers exactly what this Liverpool midfield is missing.
We need somebody athletic, aggressive and capable of protecting the defence.
Too often this season, teams have played straight through us.
Camara would bring energy, physicality and defensive qualities that could help restore some balance.
I also believe he’d represent better value than Scott.
We’re hearing figures of £80 million or more for the Bournemouth midfielder.
I like Scott, and if Iraola believes he’s the right player for his system, I’ll support that decision.
But I cannot convince myself that spending £80 million to £100 million on him represents the best possible use of our money.
As for Manu Koné, he’s simply not somebody I’ve ever been particularly enthusiastic about signing.
That doesn’t make him a bad footballer.
I just don’t believe he’s the answer to Liverpool’s specific problems.
And judging by our livestream poll last night, I’m certainly not alone.
More than 1,000 supporters voted, with 58% choosing Camara as their preferred midfield signing.

Liverpool Cannot Afford To Waste Another January Window
Here’s what really frustrates me.
We’re approaching another transfer window with obvious weaknesses in the squad, yet there are suggestions Liverpool might prefer to wait until the summer.
Why?
If Iraola wants Alex Scott, Liverpool need to understand that Chelsea aren’t necessarily going to wait around.
Bournemouth also have a decision to make regarding Scott’s contract situation.
If Liverpool genuinely want him, January could be the opportunity.
And if Camara is the preferred option, I’d be asking why we cannot make that move instead.
We keep having these conversations about players we might sign in six months.
Meanwhile, the same problems remain on the pitch.
We need midfield protection. We need greater depth. We also need another reliable option at right-back.
I don’t believe signing another expensive winger should come before addressing those positions.
Rio Ngumoha and Víctor Muñoz have already shown that we possess exciting attacking options.
Give Iraola the players he actually needs.

Liverpool Should Be Building A Squad To Win Trophies
The Felix Nmecha links are another reminder of how many different midfielders are being discussed.
Reports of contact with his representatives add another name to an already crowded conversation.
But interest means very little without action.
And that’s where my frustration with Liverpool’s recruitment strategy comes from.
I don’t want us reaching the end of another season talking about the players we nearly signed.
I want Liverpool competing for trophies.
I want to see our captain lifting silverware, our supporters celebrating at Wembley and Anfield hosting the biggest European nights.
Champions League qualification should be a minimum expectation, not the ultimate ambition.
And if we genuinely want to challenge on several fronts, we need a squad capable of handling the demands.
That means making difficult decisions, spending money intelligently and recognising the value of players we already have.
For me, Alexis Mac Allister is one of those players.
I’d be delighted to see Lamine Camara arrive in January.
I’d support Alex Scott if he’s the midfielder Iraola wants.
But I cannot understand why Liverpool would consider investing heavily in midfield while allowing Mac Allister’s future to become another unnecessary problem.
Strengthen what we’ve got.
Back the manager.
And start acting like a football club determined to win trophies.
Much Love.
