A Coach Who Knows Exactly What He Is Signing
We like a transfer that tells you something about a manager’s priorities, and in our view the arrival of Victor Munoz does exactly that. At 23, the forward joins off the back of a breakout La Liga campaign with Osasuna and a place in Spain’s World Cup squad, and it looks like Andoni Iraola has gone after readiness and profile rather than reputation for its own sake.
There is nothing showy in how Iraola has talked about the deal. He has framed Munoz as a player who is ready to compete and ready to put in the work, which is about as high a compliment as this particular coach tends to hand out. He even joked that either Munoz or Alexis Mac Allister would end up lifting the World Cup, a throwaway line, sure, but one that hints at the regard Munoz is held in before he has even reported for pre-season duty at Kirkby.
Versatility Was Clearly the Selling Point
What stands out most from Iraola’s comments is the repeated emphasis on versatility. Munoz can operate across the front line, capable of playing right or left, and that flexibility matters enormously in a squad that needs cover without a drop in intensity. Iraola has described him as hungry and ambitious but still humble enough to know he needs to arrive fully prepared, which is exactly the kind of mentality Liverpool’s forward areas could use more of.
Iraola said: “With Victor, I think we signed him in a moment where he’s very hungry, he’s ambitious, but he’s still humble and knows that he has to come very ready. I think he’s someone with some versatility – can play right, can play left, he has the work-rate also for all that we will require.”
We think that is the real story here. Liverpool have not simply bought a finished product, they have brought in a forward on an upward curve, and one whose attitude appears to match the talent.
Work Rate Over Everything
Iraola has also stressed the practical side of what Munoz offers, namely a work rate that fits what he demands from every attacker in his system. Liverpool under this manager want forwards who run, press, adapt and follow instructions without complaint, and by that measure Munoz appears to tick every box.
There will be a short wait before he links up properly with the group, with Spain still occupied at the World Cup final, but Iraola has already made clear he is looking forward to having him involved. Our verdict is a simple one. This is a signing built on youth, energy and flexibility, and if Munoz handles the step up as expected, it could quietly become one of the shrewder forward additions of the summer.
