A January return to Italy looks like the only sensible outcome for Chiesa

We have watched his Liverpool career with more sympathy than most transfer sagas deserve, because none of this looks like a player who stopped caring. It looks like a player whose body stopped cooperating at exactly the wrong moments. Reports from Italy now suggest a January move back to Serie A, with Napoli mentioned among the clubs who could make an approach once the window reopens, and if that is accurate then this story is closer to its ending than its middle.

The injury problem Liverpool cannot ignore

Strip away the sentiment and the case for letting Chiesa go becomes fairly simple. He arrived from Juventus expecting to be part of Liverpool’s rebuild, but he has never had the consistent run of games needed to show it working. Another spell on the sidelined list, with weeks rather than days as the expected timeframe, leaves Andoni Iraola unable to build any plan around him. A manager can coach a player back into form. He cannot coach a hamstring or a groin into staying fit, and a squad with this many other calls on minutes cannot keep waiting on one that will not.

Why Serie A makes sense for both sides

A move back to Italy in January would solve two problems at once. It gives Chiesa the regular football he needs to remind people of the player who once had scouts and former colleagues purring about his potential, the kind of praise that has never really stopped following him around even as his game time has dried up. And it frees a squad spot Liverpool could use on someone better suited to what Iraola wants from his front line. Neither side gains much from six more months of a player who is barely available. A clean break now, rather than a drawn out one next summer, would probably suit everyone.

None of this diminishes what Chiesa offered Anfield when he was actually fit. The energy and the eye for a big moment were never really in question, and there will be supporters who feel this transfer, if it happens, closes the book on a signing that never got a fair run. But form and fitness rarely line up twice for the same player at the same club, and this one reads like a case where the timing has simply run out. If January arrives and an Italian club comes calling, we would not be surprised by it, and we would not blame Liverpool for listening either.
