Relax, Mac Allister Isn’t Going Anywhere Just Yet

Alexis Mac Allister has gone back over his own words this week, trying to calm a story that grew bigger than he probably intended. Nothing has changed on his contract, nothing has been decided, and the panic that followed his earlier comments looks overdone once you actually read what he said.

We understand why this got attention in the first place. Mac Allister is 27, has two years left on his current deal and remains central to how Andoni Iraola wants his midfield to function. When a player of that standing raises his future publicly, especially just after other squad members signed extensions, people naturally react.

Nothing has actually been decided

Speaking to SportsCenter ESPN, Mac Allister made clear there is no final call either way. He still has two years remaining and, by his own account, that is simply where things stand for now.

He also went back to explain why his original comments carried so much emotion. He was responding in the moment to questions about his future, not making a statement against the club, and he was quick to stress that Liverpool are entitled to run their own business however they see fit.

Context matters here

Those original remarks landed shortly before Liverpool faced Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, when Mac Allister admitted he was frustrated at not being offered new terms sooner. It is worth remembering the response that followed. A day later he scored the winner in a 2-1 victory over the Spanish side at Anfield, a reminder of exactly why Iraola rates him so highly regardless of what is happening off the pitch.

Plenty of time to sort this out

Mac Allister joined from Brighton in 2023 and has racked up more than 150 appearances since, playing a genuine role in the title winning campaign of 2024/25. His latest comments suggest he would be open to staying well beyond his current terms too, saying he is enjoying his time at the club and is in no rush either way.

That leaves Liverpool with a situation to manage rather than a crisis to fear. Two years remain on the deal, no extension is in place, and by Mac Allister’s own admission no final decision has been made. Iraola has previously said there is still plenty of time to work through the contract talk, and on the evidence of this week, nobody involved seems to be losing sleep over it.
