Schade links raise a bigger question for Liverpool’s forward line

According to Sky Sports, Brentford have opened talks over a new long term contract for the 24 year old, and it is that contract situation, rather than an active move, that is driving the headlines this week.

Schade has entered the final two years of his existing deal, giving Brentford an obvious incentive to act before his value climbs any further out of reach. Liverpool and Arsenal are said to be the keenest of his admirers, with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur also credited with tracking him.

Form that explains the fuss

Schade joined from Freiburg back in 2023 and has steadily grown into one of Brentford’s most important attacking players. He has scored three times in his opening five league appearances this season, including a brace against Bournemouth that earned him a Premier League Player of the Month nomination. Keith Andrews has described him as a constant threat who works tirelessly for the team, which is a fair summary of a forward built on speed, direct running and defensive graft.

Liverpool fans will not need reminding that Schade can punish them directly either. He scored in the one one draw with Brentford at Anfield on the final day of last season, so his threat is not exactly theoretical from a Liverpool point of view.

Would he actually fit under Iraola?

This is where it gets interesting. Andoni Iraola’s version of Liverpool asks a lot of forwards without the ball, and Schade’s profile, all energy and pressing, lines up well with that demand. The complication is fit rather than quality. Liverpool already have options who can operate from the left, and Cody Gakpo and Victor Munoz have both featured in wider forward roles too.
