Inter’s Chiesa Interest Shows How Far He’s Fallen From Iraola’s Plans

Federico Chiesa’s Time at Anfield May Be Running Out

Liverpool’s business with Inter Milan this year has not been limited to one deal, and it may not stay that way for much longer. Curtis Jones swapped Anfield for the San Siro over the summer after a drawn out negotiation that closed a sixteen year chapter at the club, and now the same Italian side are reportedly eyeing a second name from Merseyside. According to L’Interista, Inter are weighing up a January move for Federico Chiesa.

A Deal That Fits a Pattern

On paper this one carries far more weight than the Jones transfer did. Jones was a homegrown player moving on to further his career elsewhere. Chiesa is a forward Liverpool brought in with genuine ambition, and a move away this soon would raise real questions about recruitment and squad planning. Even so, the report suggests Inter see an opening, with the Italian club reportedly keen to add a forward who can operate in wide areas and beat a full back in a one on one.

Chiesa was already a talking point at Inter during the summer window, and the suggestion now is that he could resurface in their thinking if space opens up under Cristian Chivu in January. There is an obvious logic to that interest. At 28, Chiesa is at a stage of his career where regular football matters more than ever, and his time in England has done little to move him forward since his early struggles with injury interrupted what had looked like a promising start.

Why Inter Makes Sporting Sense

Inter’s 3-5-2 shape offers more than one route into the side for a player of Chiesa’s profile. He has featured as a wing back in Serie A before, and he has also spent long spells playing as part of a front two, so the versatility argument for Inter is straightforward. A settled run of matches in a system that knows how to use him could also do wonders for his standing with the Italy squad, something that has slipped while his club football has stalled. International recognition tends to follow playing time far more reliably than reputation alone, and Chiesa has not had the minutes at Anfield to remind anyone of what he can do.

There is a personal dimension here too. L’Interista report that Chiesa would be open to a return to Italy and would not rule out Inter specifically, despite his background at Juventus. That willingness matters. A player who wants the move tends to make it easier for all three parties, the selling club included, to find a workable agreement rather than dragging a transfer window out the way some sagas do.

What It Means for Liverpool’s Squad Planning

For Liverpool, any January business involving Chiesa would need to be weighed against the wider picture up front. Jones leaving already thinned out the club’s options in central areas, and losing another attacking body inside the same calendar year is not a decision to be made lightly, whatever the player’s current standing in the squad. There is also a financial consideration in any sale, even one built more around moving a player on than maximising a fee, and Liverpool’s recruitment staff will want to be sure the money raised gets reinvested sensibly rather than simply covering a gap left behind.

Our Take

The uncomfortable part of this story for Liverpool is what it says about where Chiesa currently sits in the squad. Andoni Iraola has options across the front line, and it is hard to see a version of the current side where Chiesa forces his way back into a settled role between now and January. If that assessment holds, letting him rebuild his career and his international standing elsewhere might end up being the sensible outcome for everyone involved, Chiesa included. It would not be the story Liverpool fans wanted when he first arrived, but squads move on, and sentiment rarely wins out over game time in the end. Watch this one closely as the window approaches, because a second deal with Inter would say almost as much about Liverpool’s direction as it would about Chiesa’s own next step.
