The interest that never quite went away
This isn’t a new name. Liverpool held conversations with Real Madrid over a possible deal for Tchouameni in the summer, and Manchester United were credited with interest of their own at the same time. That window closed when the 25 year old sat down with Jose Mourinho and opted to commit his future to the Spanish capital instead. Liverpool’s midfield is stacked with promise, not urgency
It’s worth remembering why Liverpool didn’t chase a senior midfielder over the summer despite Curtis Jones moving on. There’s real faith inside the building in Trey Nyoni and James McConnell, both of whom are viewed as players capable of growing into consistent first team midfielders rather than squad fillers. That’s the more likely path for now. But the report suggests the club aren’t ruling out reacting if a genuinely elite option like Tchouameni becomes realistically available, which is just sensible planning rather than any change of transfer strategy.
The Bernabeu role could be the deciding factor
Everything hinges on what Tchouameni’s season under Mourinho actually looks like. If he’s a guaranteed starter, this entire story fades quickly. If he finds himself rotated more than he’d like, the picture could shift, and reports suggest he wouldn’t be content to settle for a squad role at one of Europe’s biggest clubs. There’s something to like about Liverpool keeping this option open rather than closing the book entirely. Any club with genuine ambition should be doing exactly that with players of Tchouameni’s level, and there’s no downside to staying in contact when it costs nothing. At the same time, it’s hard to get carried away. He’s just signed fresh terms, he’s still at one of the most successful clubs on the planet, and nothing here points to Liverpool accelerating a move. With Nyoni and McConnell pushing through and Alexander Isak already giving the squad genuine star power up front, midfield reinforcement doesn’t look like the most pressing item on Liverpool’s list either. File this one under names worth watching rather than moves worth expecting anytime soon.
