Why Sunday’s Referee Pick Already Has Liverpool Fans Uneasy

Kavanagh Returns To Anfield With Baggage Attached

Chris Kavanagh has been handed the whistle for Sunday’s visit of Manchester City to Anfield, and in our view that single detail already adds another layer to a fixture that didn’t need one. Dan Cook and Nick Greenhalgh will run the lines, Andy Madley takes the fourth official’s role, and Paul Howard sits in the VAR booth with Nick Hopton assisting. On paper it’s a routine appointment. In practice, given the history involved, it’s anything but.

A Referee Liverpool Fans Remember

Kavanagh was the man in the middle the last time these two sides met, the game in which Virgil van Dijk saw a legitimate looking equaliser chalked off and City went on to win at home. Liverpool lodged a formal complaint afterwards, and that episode hasn’t been forgotten around Anfield. Add in the fact that Kavanagh and Greenhalgh were both stood down by the officiating body in February following mistakes in an FA Cup tie between Aston Villa and Newcastle, and you can understand why some supporters will already be bracing themselves before a ball is kicked. None of that guarantees anything will go wrong on Sunday. It does mean every contentious call will be picked apart in real time.

City Arrive Under A Different Kind Of Pressure

This is also the first time City have played since an independent commission ruled they had broken Premier League financial regulations across nine seasons. City reject the findings and are appealing, so nothing is settled, but the ruling has already reshaped how every one of their matches is being talked about. Walking into Anfield under that cloud only sharpens the occasion further.

A Fixture That Barely Needed Extra Edge

Liverpool and City were always going to produce a highly charged afternoon at Anfield on October 11, with kick-off at 4.30pm. Andoni Iraola’s side will see it as a chance to make a real statement at home, and with City distracted by matters off the pitch, the stakes on it feel higher than usual. Throw in a referee with this particular recent record against this particular opponent, and Sunday has the makings of one of the most scrutinised 90 minutes of the season so far.
