Why Liverpool Should Make Ronald Araujo’s Move Permanent

The Case for Giving Ronald Araujo a Permanent Home at Anfield

Liverpool’s thinking on Ronald Araujo may need to firm up well before the season is finished. Journalist David Lynch has made the case that the Barcelona loanee has already done enough to earn a long term future at Anfield under Andoni Iraola, pointing to a run of performances that has quietly become one of the more pleasant surprises of the campaign.

Araujo’s latest contribution came in Liverpool’s thunderous 6-3 Champions League win over LASK, where the Uruguayan opened the scoring with a powerful header. It was the kind of moment that reinforced an argument already building around him, that his aerial presence offers Liverpool something different from open play and particularly at attacking set pieces.

Balancing the Back Line

Lynch has been especially taken with how Araujo balances the defensive unit, operating with a centre back profile even when deployed at right back. That versatility, in his view, is a significant part of the appeal, since it also allows Virgil van Dijk periods of rest without Liverpool losing any physical presence at the back. Araujo’s adaptation to English football has been just as striking, with Lynch arguing he already looks a natural fit for the pace and physicality of the Premier League.

The Barcelona Price Tag Problem

The complication, inevitably, is money. Araujo’s loan carries a buy back arrangement worth around £47m, and Lynch remains unconvinced Liverpool would be willing to meet that figure as things stand. “I just don’t think they would pay the amount that’s in there that’s been agreed already,” he said, suggesting the number currently on the table is simply too rich for Liverpool’s liking. His hope is that Barcelona’s own financial pressures could soften their stance, opening the door to a lower fee that both clubs could accept.

Why Andoni Iraola Could Push the Case

Lynch believes Iraola himself could become the driving force behind any permanent deal once the season nears its end, with the manager clearly valuing what Araujo brings to his back line. The Brentford test this weekend, with its long throws and aerial duels, is exactly the kind of fixture that could strengthen that argument further, giving Iraola fresh evidence to make his case to the hierarchy.

Our Take

It is easy to see why this conversation keeps resurfacing. Araujo has slotted into a role that could easily have been an afterthought and made it look like a genuine upgrade, offering cover across two positions while adding a physical dimension Liverpool have occasionally lacked. The fee will decide everything in the end, and Barcelona are unlikely to simply hand over a discount. Even so, if Iraola is prepared to fight for this one, Liverpool supporters would be entitled to get behind it. A defender this adaptable, at a club still shaping its identity under a new head coach, is not an easy thing to walk away from.
