Saka Setback Gives Iraola Extra Incentive at Anfield

Liverpool welcome Arsenal to Anfield on Sunday, November 1, and the build up has been shaped almost entirely by one headline, Bukayo Saka is set to miss the game. Taking one of the Premier League’s most decisive forwards out of a fixture like this immediately changes how it is viewed around the division.

A Chance Liverpool Should Want to Take

For Andoni Iraola, the timing could matter. His start at the club has been encouraging enough, helped by some strong performances in Europe, but there is still a domestic box left unchecked. He has yet to oversee a Premier League win on home soil, and with Brighton, Chelsea and Arsenal all arriving in quick succession, there is little margin for a slow start to that run.

Liverpool are not entirely clear of problems themselves. Dominik Szoboszlai, Victor Munoz and Jeremie Frimpong are all dealing with knocks, and none can be guaranteed to feature across the coming fixtures. Iraola was straightforward when discussing Munoz, explaining that the issue stems from a knock picked up against Brentford and that the club will likely take a couple of extra days with him given he was forced off again having previously returned. On Szoboszlai, the message was more positive, with the midfielder already training alone outside and expected to rejoin the group soon, even if Sunday comes too early for him.

Arsenal’s Problem Looks More Serious

Arsenal’s situation appears harder to manage. Saka was injured early in the first half against Bayern Munich, and the expectation now is that he will be out for at least six weeks, with some reports suggesting the layoff could stretch to eight. Mikel Arteta did little to soften that picture, revealing that Saka needed a further scan after swelling was found and that more information would follow in the coming days.

The knock on effect is significant. Saka already looked doubtful for Arsenal’s upcoming game against Everton, and on current information he is highly likely to miss the trip to Anfield as well. Arsenal will also be without Christos Tzolis, adding to a growing list of absences at an awkward moment in their season.

What It Means for Anfield

Taken together, this is a fixture where both sides have selection worries, but Arsenal’s looks considerably more damaging. If Liverpool can navigate their own niggles and take care of business against Brighton and Chelsea beforehand, the visit of an Arsenal side missing their most dangerous attacker becomes an opportunity to make a genuine statement. Losing a player of Saka’s quality for a game like this is the kind of blow that can define how a top of the table fixture actually plays out, and Liverpool should be looking to take full advantage.
