Frimpong injury leaves Iraola with a fresh right-back puzzle before Brighton

Why Liverpool Can Afford to Be Patient Over Frimpong’s Fresh Injury Blow

Right back was already a problem position for Liverpool and now it has got worse. Jeremie Frimpong, among the most eye catching arrivals of last summer’s title winning window, is set for a spell on the sidelines and is unlikely to be seen again before the November international break. It is hardly a crisis on its own, but the timing could not be much worse given how packed the fixture list is about to become.

According to The Athletic, this is a new muscle problem rather than a recurrence of anything Frimpong had previously dealt with. Andoni Iraola did not try to dress it up when he spoke about it. He called it a new muscle injury and admitted it was difficult to say exactly when the full back would be fit again, adding that the club would try to have him available but that it looked unlikely before the upcoming break.

There is a sliver of good news in that nobody at the club is describing this as serious. Still, reassuring medical language does not put a player back on the pitch. Frimpong had only just found the net in the thrilling 6-3 win over LASK before he was introduced from the bench against Brentford and managed only six minutes before discomfort forced him off. The pattern speaks for itself even if the individual verdict on the damage is mild.

A Right Side Already Under Strain

This news lands at an awkward moment because Liverpool’s options down that flank were thin before Frimpong went down. Conor Bradley continues to work his way back from his own injury, and Ronald Araujo barely featured in midweek before being taken off as a precaution. Iraola has had to get creative, shifting Ryan Gravenberch into an unfamiliar right back role on one occasion and asking Joe Gomez to help cover the width on another. Those are workable short term fixes, not solutions for a run of fixtures.

Brighton travel to Anfield in good shape, scoring consistently and well drilled under Fabian Hurzeler. Liverpool should still be favourites given home advantage, but losing a player with Frimpong’s pace and directness removes a weapon that few teams in this squad can replicate. His return is not urgent if the alternative is rushing a muscle issue that then becomes a repeat visitor.

Our Take

The frustration here is obvious. Frimpong looked to be building exactly the kind of rhythm that would have made facing Brighton the perfect stage to kick on, and now that chance is gone for the time being. That said, losing patience with the club’s medical approach would be the wrong response. Liverpool have already seen enough soft tissue issues this season to know what happens when these things are handled carelessly.

If anything, the international break could end up working in Liverpool’s favour here. A handful of missed matches now is a far better outcome than nursing the same hamstring complaint into December and January, when the schedule shows no mercy at all. Frimpong has already shown enough quality in a Liverpool shirt to prove he is worth protecting properly rather than gambling with.

None of this needs to turn into a crisis. The squad has the depth and the quality to get through a short absence, particularly with Anfield behind them against Brighton. The sensible path is simple: manage the recovery properly, resist any temptation to rush him back early, and treat this as a blip rather than a turning point in his first season on Merseyside.
