Castello Lukeba Is Back on Liverpool’s Radar, and the Numbers Finally Work
Liverpool’s defensive planning appears to be circling back towards a familiar name, with Castello Lukeba resurfacing as a genuine target ahead of a future transfer window. The 23 year old RB Leipzig centre back spent last year near the top of most shortlists for emerging defenders, and fresh reporting suggests the numbers around a deal have shifted in a way that makes him far more realistic.

According to Ekrem Konur, Lukeba is poised to be on the radar of several of Europe’s biggest clubs heading into next year, with Liverpool named alongside Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich as sides showing interest. The same update puts his likely price in the region of €50m.
That figure changes the calculation significantly. Earlier in his time at Leipzig, Lukeba’s valuation hovered closer to €90m, a number that priced most suitors out of a serious conversation. A fee closer to half that total looks very different for a club weighing up quality, age profile and resale value in one package.
Why Lukeba Fits What Liverpool Need
Liverpool’s need for defensive reinforcement has been a consistent theme as the side has looked to toughen up under Andoni Iraola. Lukeba checks a lot of boxes in that context. He is left footed, which remains a genuinely scarce trait among top level centre backs, has already featured in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League, and sits at an age where there should still be significant room to develop.
His versatility adds to the appeal. Lukeba has also featured at left back during his time in Germany, which gives a coaching staff extra flexibility during a congested fixture list or an injury crisis, without having to significantly lower the level of the side when minutes are shared around.
What €50m Buys in This Market
If that fee holds, Lukeba would represent a smart market move rather than a speculative gamble. He may not arrive as the finished article, but when genuine ability becomes available below earlier valuations, serious clubs tend to take notice quickly. There are still broader squad questions for Liverpool to work through, and alternatives will be under consideration elsewhere, but this is exactly the kind of development worth watching closely.
Our View
Reports like this one catch the eye for a reason. Left footed centre backs with genuine quality are hard to find, and ones who can also cover at left back are rarer still. What stands out most here is the balance between what Liverpool need right now and what they need two or three years down the line. Lukeba looks capable of both, young enough to keep improving, but experienced enough that he would not need an extended bedding in period.
Competition from Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Manchester United will not make this straightforward, and Liverpool will have to decide how seriously they want to push rather than simply monitor from a distance. At around €50m, though, this looks less like a luxury and more like an opportunity the club should be willing to act on.
There is also a timing argument worth making. Liverpool’s back line has looked more settled in recent weeks under Iraola, but that stability has come from workload and rotation being managed carefully rather than genuine depth. Adding a defender of Lukeba’s profile would not just be about the present squad, it would be about making sure the next two or three transfer windows do not turn into a scramble if injuries or form dips force the issue.
