Liverpool 2-0 Brighton: Isak Strikes as Reds End Anfield Premier League Wait

Liverpool finally celebrated their first home Premier League victory of the season after overcoming Brighton 2-0 at Anfield, with Alexander Isak continuing his impressive goalscoring form.

Andoni Iraola’s side delivered a commanding first-half display, scoring twice in four minutes to halt Brighton’s four-match winning streak in the Premier League. An own goal from Pascal Groß and a clinical finish from Isak proved sufficient to secure three valuable points.

The victory represented Liverpool’s fourth consecutive win in all competitions and lifted them into fourth place, just one point behind Brighton in the standings.

Liverpool Punish Brighton’s Missed Opportunity

Brighton arrived at Anfield in outstanding form, having established themselves among the Premier League’s early frontrunners. However, their impressive attacking record counted for little once Liverpool found their rhythm.

The visitors squandered an excellent opportunity in the 14th minute when Yasin Ayari fired over from close range following a clever cut-back from Groß.

Liverpool responded emphatically.

In the 17th minute, Florian Wirtz collected a partially cleared cross from Ronald Araújo and drove a low effort towards goal. The ball struck Groß and found the bottom corner, leaving Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen helpless.

Four minutes later, Liverpool doubled their advantage through another devastating attacking move.

Bradley Barcola displayed tremendous acceleration to intercept an attempted clearance before driving into space on the right. The French winger delivered a precise ball into the penalty area, where Isak applied a composed first-time finish.

It was another important contribution from Liverpool’s Swedish striker, who has now scored six Premier League goals this season.

Brighton Threaten but Liverpool’s Defence Responds

Despite Liverpool’s two-goal advantage, Brighton continued to pose problems during an entertaining opening period.

Ayari came closest to reducing the deficit when his curling effort struck the post after Liverpool surrendered possession while attempting to build from the back.

The incident highlighted an occasional vulnerability in Liverpool’s defensive organisation, although the home side produced several impressive interventions to preserve their advantage.

Araújo and Jérémy Jacquet demonstrated considerable commitment with important defensive blocks, while Virgil van Dijk helped maintain stability against Brighton’s attacking movement.

Liverpool might have extended their lead before the interval, but Verbruggen produced an excellent save to deny Araújo’s powerful effort.

Iraola Secures Important Premier League Victory

Brighton enjoyed greater possession after the restart as Fabian Hürzeler’s side searched for a route back into the contest.

Liverpool found opportunities to exploit the spaces left behind by the visitors, although their decision-making in attacking areas occasionally prevented them from adding a third goal.

Cody Gakpo threatened on several occasions without finding the finishing touch, while Barcola remained a dangerous outlet whenever Liverpool broke forward.

Iraola introduced Trey Nyoni for Wirtz midway through the second half, with the German departing following a knock. The young midfielder quickly made an important defensive contribution, stopping a threatening run from Maxim De Cuyper.

Further substitutions brought Rio Ngumoha and Lewis Koumas into the action as Liverpool looked to maintain their advantage.

Brighton continued to push forward, but Liverpool’s defensive discipline ensured Alisson was rarely seriously troubled during the closing stages.

For Iraola, the clean sheet was particularly encouraging after a period in which Liverpool’s defensive performances had attracted scrutiny.

The result also provides a timely confidence boost ahead of another demanding sequence of fixtures, with Liverpool beginning to build momentum following a difficult start to the campaign.

Having previously drawn all three of their home Premier League matches, Liverpool finally delivered the Anfield victory their supporters had been waiting for.

Against one of the division’s most impressive teams, the Reds combined attacking intensity, clinical finishing and determined defending to claim a significant result.

Final score: Liverpool 2-0 Brighton

Goals: Pascal Groß (own goal, 17′), Alexander Isak (21′)
