A January Exit Could Be The Kindest Outcome For Chiesa

Federico Chiesa’s time at Liverpool looks to be edging towards a quiet conclusion. According to Flashscore, reporter Dean Jones believes a January return to Serie A is now a genuine possibility for the forward. For a player who arrived from Juventus back in 2024 with real hope of making his mark on Merseyside, this is a tough situation to watch play out.

A Fresh Start That Never Really Arrived

There was a moment, when Andoni Iraola took over in the Anfield dugout, where it looked like Chiesa might get the clean slate he needed. Instead, the opposite has happened. His recovery from a back problem earlier in the season has not translated into regular minutes, and his place in the forward pecking order has grown increasingly precarious. With Hugo Ekitike working his way back from injury and Lewis Koumas pushing for involvement from within the club’s own academy pipeline, the queue ahead of Chiesa shows no sign of getting any shorter.

It is worth remembering that squad depth cuts both ways. A manager rebuilding his attacking options needs bodies he trusts in the biggest moments, and right now Chiesa simply is not getting the nod often enough to suggest he is part of that picture. That is not necessarily a reflection of his talent, more a sign of how crowded Liverpool’s forward line has become and how little patience there is for players stuck on the fringes.

Serie A Clubs Are Paying Attention

The report names Lazio, Inter Milan and Roma among the clubs keeping tabs on the 29 year old as the January window approaches. None of that guarantees a move will actually happen this winter, but it does point to a genuine appetite in Italy to take him back into a league where he previously thrived before his switch to England. Chiesa’s situation is far from unique among players who arrive with huge promise only to find a new tactical setup has no real room for them. What matters now is whether Liverpool and the player are reading the situation the same way.

What This Means For Iraola’s Rebuild

Iraola is still shaping his squad, his pressing structure and his attacking rotations, and that process works far better without unresolved situations hanging over the group. A player who knows he is not in the plans can become a distraction even without meaning to, and clearing the picture in January rather than June gives everyone, Chiesa included, more certainty heading into the second half of the season.

A Decision Liverpool Cannot Keep Putting Off

There is also a financial and sporting logic to settling this quickly. Clubs tend to get better value for a player when there is still genuine competition for his signature, rather than waiting until the summer when his contract situation and lack of game time could weaken Liverpool’s negotiating position. Iraola’s priority this winter should be making sure every member of his squad either has a defined role or a realistic path out, and Chiesa currently fits neither category comfortably. Letting the situation drift risks leaving him stuck between two clubs mentally, never fully committed to fighting for a place that looks increasingly out of reach, nor free to find regular football elsewhere.

Our View

If this is genuinely how things stand, the most sensible outcome for everyone involved is a clean break in January rather than a slow fade through to the summer. Chiesa deserves regular football somewhere that wants him, and Liverpool gain very little from carrying a player through another half season of brief cameos and bench omissions. There is a touch of sadness in how this appears to be unfolding. He arrived with genuine pedigree and the belief he could add real quality to Liverpool’s forward options. If a return to Serie A is indeed the most realistic path back to being a regular starter again, both parties would do well to get it resolved quickly rather than let it drag on.
