Tuchel’s faith in Rio Ngumoha says plenty about Liverpool’s teenage winger

Why Rio Ngumoha’s latest England call-up matters more than his three caps suggest

There is a difference between a manager handing a teenager a token appearance and a manager building him into his plans. With Rio Ngumoha, we are now fairly confident Thomas Tuchel is doing the latter. The Liverpool winger has been named in England’s 25-man group for the last Nations League double-header of 2026, and he is the only player from our club to make the cut.

That alone tells a story. Ngumoha is 18, he has not scored for his country, and he has started very little senior international football. Yet camp after camp his name keeps appearing. Selections like that are not accidents.

A fast start in an England shirt

It is worth remembering how quickly this has moved. His first cap arrived in June, a second-half run-out in Tampa during a narrow 1-0 victory over New Zealand, which made him one of the five youngest players ever to debut for the national side. A competitive bow followed against Czechia in a 2-0 Nations League win, and at 18 years and 31 days he trails only Wayne Rooney and Jude Bellingham on that particular list. Another appearance off the bench against the Czechs a week later took him to three caps.

Our view is simple. Tuchel first got a proper look at him in Florida ahead of the World Cup and clearly liked what he saw. Keeping him around now, in a squad that has dropped some very big names, is a vote of confidence rather than a kindness.

The bigger names left behind

That is the part that makes this selection stand out. Cole Palmer misses out yet again and has not played for England since March, while Phil Foden is also absent. Ben White, meanwhile, earns a recall. These are hard calls on proven Premier League performers, and they make Ngumoha’s inclusion look even more deliberate.

He is not the only youngster rewarded either. Jobe Bellingham, now at Borussia Dortmund, gets a maiden senior call-up, as does Fulham teenager Josh King, who had already trained with the group before the World Cup. Tuchel is clearly willing to blood fresh talent.

Croatia, Spain and what comes next

England face Croatia at Wembley on Thursday 12 November before heading to Madrid to take on world champions Spain on Sunday 15 November. A top-two finish secures a quarter-final spot next March. In attack, Ngumoha will be competing with Harry Kane, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Anthony Gordon, Morgan Rogers, Eberechi Eze and Morgan Gibbs-White, so minutes are far from guaranteed.

There are familiar faces in the squad too, with former Reds Trent Alexander-Arnold of Real Madrid and Jarell Quansah of Bayer Leverkusen both selected. But for Liverpool supporters, the takeaway is about the present and the future. If Ngumoha keeps earning trust at this level, Andoni Iraola has every reason to keep trusting him at Anfield as well.
