Elliott’s Attitude Is Winning Over Aguirre, Even If The Goals Haven’t Come Yet

Why Valencia’s New Coach Still Believes In Harvey Elliott

Harvey Elliott’s loan at Valencia has not exactly gone to plan so far, and anyone hoping for an instant return to form from the Liverpool academy graduate has had to be patient. He has not started a league game yet, and there was early noise suggesting he arrived short of full fitness, the sort of narrative that can follow a player around if it is not addressed quickly.

A Fresh Voice In Elliott’s Corner

What should reassure Liverpool, and Elliott himself, is that the man now picking the team at Mestalla seems genuinely invested in making this work. Javier Aguirre inherited Elliott from Carlos Corberan, who had pushed hard to bring him in, and new coaches do not always keep faith with a predecessor’s signings once results turn sour. Aguirre has not gone down that road.

“I am fortunate that I communicate in their language. I see him more refined, he is working with a private nutritionist. I’m delighted with his attitude, he has a lot of quality and he’s a Valencia CF player. You have to get the best possible out of it,” Aguirre said, which is about as clear an endorsement as a struggling loanee could hope for.

Attitude As The First Test

That last point about attitude is worth dwelling on. For a 23 year old trying to rebuild momentum after a difficult spell at Liverpool and a stop start loan at Aston Villa before that, how he responds behind the scenes matters just as much as anything he does on the pitch. Aguirre’s comments suggest Elliott has handled the setbacks with the right mentality, and that counts for something when a manager is deciding who to trust.

It is worth remembering too that Elliott was once considered among the brightest young attacking midfielders English football had produced. A difficult campaign and an unconvincing loan spell do not erase that ceiling, they simply delay it, and a coach willing to invest in him properly could be exactly what is needed to get him back on track.

A Chance To Change The Story

The visit of Villarreal now offers Elliott another opportunity, whether that comes from kickoff or off the bench, to put real substance behind the encouraging words. Minutes, influence, and eventually a goal or an assist would do far more for his cause than any quote from his coach. Liverpool will be watching with interest, not out of obligation but because this loan was always designed around one simple idea, that responsibility and regular football would bring the best out of him again. Aguirre clearly believes that is still possible. Now it is on Elliott to prove it on the pitch.
